It seems to me that both PARI and mpmath should be an option via an
`algorithm` keyword argument. I'm at Sage Days 35.5 working on this stuff,
so one thing I could do is take the improvements in this ticket and rebase
them on top of #11948 which has been merged in 4.8.alpha6. If folks agree,
I guess that should be a new ticket and this one could be closed.
