Comment:

 The doctest problem was easy enough to solve: When starting the example
 with a garbage collection, then things work. Actually I am surprised that
 the doctest framework does not do a garbage collection at the beginning of
 each example, in order to bring the system in a defined state - I'll ask
 on sage-devel.

 Anyway, since the problem is solved and the patch updated, stuff is now
 ready for review!
