 I had `MAKE="make -j2"`, but I unset it and that didn't help.

 I did that, but it didn't help: with `SAGE_CHECK=yes` and `MAKE` unset, it
 still fails in the same spot.

 Do you mean just setting these variables, or do I need to modify the spkg?
 Just setting them (along with SAGE_CHECK and MAKE as above) doesn't help.

 I also tried temporarily clearing out /usr/local in case some old files
 there were causing conflicts, but no help.
