 Concerning stats(): Since weak references are used, the stats can
 certainly change when a garbage collection happens. In order to make such
 test fail safe, one could swith garbage collection off at the beginning of
 the "flaky" test (gc.disable()), and switch it on in the end
 (gc.enable()).
