I tried replacing CXX=clang with CXX=clang before ./configure but that
made no difference.
I downloaded and built and installed a new clang+llvm (so it is now clang
3.1) and tried again. It is no faster but revealed a few more totally
unimportant warnings which I have fixed; somewhat tedious since 5 files
were affected and recompiling ecah one took up to 2 minutes. therse will
get into the next tarball but it's not urgent.
It is a complete mystery to me how this supposedly brand new and very fast
compiler does such a slow job on *my* code!
