About the smattest issue on Cygwin, it seems to get stuck in smat_elim.cc
in the step3 function.
Not sure where exactly yet (nor why!).
And to be clear, I don't think this should be a blocker for the current
ticket (unless its solved in a couple of days...), but I'm reporting here
because I mentioned the issue here earlier.
