I've gone ahead and implemented the simple rim/sock demo in sail-core (under sail.common.examples) that doesn't need Pas. For more details see OWL-228.
To do this, I needed code from AbstractPasBuilder but that's not a dependency of the sail-core artifact. So I factored out the non-Pas code from APB and put it into classes with sail.core.util package. APB is now much simpler.
