Soylatte is the only Java 1.6 that will run on MacOS 10.4 or 32-bit systems
running 10.5.

Many JRuby benchmarks run 30% faster on Java 1.6 than on Java 1.5.

There is continuing progress towards getting the BSD Java code (of which
Soylatte is a derivation) folded back into the GPLed Java 7 codebase. The BSD
and Soylatte code are now only available under the Sun JRL license. This would
mean an open source Java 1.7 that would also run well on Macs however the Swing
code on Soylatte only works with X11 -- not with the Apple native display
systems.
