Saligao girl succumbs to burn injuries
HERALD CORRESPONDENT
CALANGUTE, JUNE 10 – A 26-year-old Sawti Sandip Ghateghasti of
Salmona, Saligao, who was severely burnt, expired at the Goa Medical
College and Hospital on Monday after fighting a losing battle with
life for nearly five days.
According to Calangute police, on June 4 they received a wireless
message from GMC, Bambolim, regarding the incident. The next day, June
5, Swati's father lodged a complaint citing harassment to her daughter
by her husband and in-laws.
He also mentioned in his complaint that her daughter might have been
burnt to death. Based on the complaint, police arrested the victim's
husband and father-in-law and remanded them to five days police
custody.
Swati completed one year of marriage on May 8 this year.
In a surprising twist to the burning incident today, in-laws of the
deceased filed a counter complaint against the victim's parents and
relatives stating the latter had resorted to violent behaviour when
Swati's body was brought home for the final rites yesterday by
breaking windowpanes.
No arrests have been made based on the in-laws' complaint. PSI Narayan
Chimulkar is investigating the case.
