Since the magical title of Snake Charmer has 'raised its mystifying hood', we thought it timely to tell you of a new generation of snake enthusiasts. George & Victoria Lobo (Giselle & Ashley's children from Nig Vaddo), Dillon D'Souza (grandson to Nicholas Sequiera and down in Saligao from Abu Dhabi only on holidays), Tarika & Suhail Kiran (our children) all in the age group of 10-13, formed the 'Save the Planet Club' some time ago. Saving snakes is one of their interests. Training with 'Green Cross' volunteers, they are slowly learning to rescue snakes from their own houses and compounds, handle then and finally release them in their natural habitat. Various varieties of the slithering community, both venemous and non-venemous, docile and aggressive alike, regularly invite themselves to George & Victoria's home. A "snake call" to us and off we are to the rescue, handling equipment in tow. Once there, everyone gets into the rescuing act. After a bit of snake-catching drama, all then trek up the hill opposite their house or to a remote, wooded area or water body and release the unhappy prisoner. The Lobos have played gracious host to venomous Cobras and Russel's Vipers as well as non-venemous Checkered Keelbacks, Bronzebacks, Ratsnakes and most recently one thoughtfully named after them - a Wolf Snake! Every crawly visitor has been welcomed with our legendary Goan hospitality and after the exciting adventure (more for the hosts and their friends than the frightened guest!), accorded a warm send off. GenX knows that there is no such thing as *snake charming*. You can only rescue them, handle them with care and respect and then return them to where they truly belong. More creepy-crawly-chronicles from Saligao in our next... In solidarity with wild life conservationists all over Goa.
