It takes guts to start a business. The ones who make it wealthy, are the ones who took the risk of venturing into a business. Most people today are scared to take up any business. Besides in my opinion (I am subject to correction), many of the people of Goa are too dependant on tourism related businesses. There is no diversification or efforts to diversify once the tourism related business has taken off. Today there is tourism because of the beauty of Goa. People come from all over the world/India to see the greenery, beautiful beaches and the beautiful goan people. But when times are changing…. See the way foreign tourists are treated; I see mostly kannada newspapers are available on the Panjim busstand (there are hardly any English newspapers, forget Konkani publications), from the mandovi river you can see the beautiful lush greenery, but alas now dotted with huge neon hoardings which make the words “Tata Indicom” and “Airtel” a part of the landscape. The size of the neon letters is such that it is best viewed from the other side of the river and it is supposed to make a good backdrop for any photo. Can tourism be sustained for more than a decade? Ok problems are many, so if I list them I will drift from the topic. So, when times are changing, it would be smart to diversify our businesses by slowly reducing our dependence on tourism. With buildings coming up everywhere, we might become another Bombay.. do people go to Bombay for tourism?… well they might go and visit the Juhu beach. But just in case we become like Bombay, we should be prepared by having businesses which are different. Like Ashley.
