HERALD CORRESPONDENT Saligao residents oppose bypass HERALD CORRESPONDENT CALANGUTE, MARCH 16 Residents of Saligao are up in arms against the proposed bypass through the hilly areas of Saligao from Porvorim to Baga. Speaking to Herald, Ashley Delaney, a Village Committee member, informed that they came to know of the new proposed road while mapping up the regional plan for the village. “Surprisingly, the road has been demarcated all along the hilly areas and slopes, which will destroy the Salmona Spring for its unique water and bird sanctuary in Saligao,” added Delaney. According to sources, at the on-going village level meetings for the regional plan, strong objections were raised against the proposed road with villagers demanding a site inspection to gauge the magnitude of damage to the nature. However, a site inspection was conducted with few panchas and locals. It was observed that the road alignment was just not feasible as it was destroying Saligao. It was also noted that the bypass was not serving any purpose on traffic congestion in the village. The Village Committee for Regional Plan also pointed out that the entire road pathway is actually on the slopes and would damage the social forest areas of Saligao. The committee also pointed out that the entire stretch of land belongs to the Communidade with exception of a private property. Members of the Village Committee also pointed out that the local authorities and Town and Country Planning feigned ignorance of the proposed road with few even questioning the motive of such a bypass through the hilly areas bordering Saligao. Residents of Saligao have also questioned the requirement of a bypass when there is an existing proposal for a bypass from Pilerne Industrial Estate via the borders over the hill to Sangolda passing next to Hotel Gautam, Porvorim. The residents have decided to raise the issue in the gram sabha which has been convened to approve RP 2021 for the village and reject the proposed road out rightly.
