Fireman hurt; trees crash on two houses at Saligao HERALD CORRESPONDENT CALANGUTE, JUNE 7 One fire service personnel was injured, while two houses were damaged as huge trees came crashing down on them at Sonarbhat-Saligao late Saturday. According to reports, a huge banyan tree uprooted causing damages to two houses at Sonarbhat. Luckily, there were no casualties. Both the house owners have roughly estimated the loss to over Rs 1 lakh. The two houses belonged to Suryakant Mhambrey and Robert Mendes. However, the Mendes family had a narrow escape as they were sleeping in the room where the huge tree partly came crashing down. Panjim Fire Service team led by Neelesh Fernandes arrived at the site on Sunday at about 11.30 am and carried out the rescue work. However, their work was hampered due to rains. While undertaking rescue work, Suhas Naik, a fire fighter, received injuries. He was rushed to Primary Health Centre, Candolim for medical treatment by Saligao Sarpanch Bholanath Ghadi. Speaking to Herald, former Saligao deputy sarpanch Roland D’Souza said that the government and the concerned authorities should cut down such huge trees instead of waiting for the tragedies to take place. “People too should join hands in the rescue work and help those affected by such tragedies instead of waiting for the government machinery,” said D’Souza. Speaking to Herald, Bholanath Ghadi Sankhalkar said that the issue of cutting of trees will be immediately brought to the notice of government departments and promised to take up the issue with the concerned departments to avoid any further tragedy in the area. COLLEM (HC): Heavy rains lashed Collem late Saturday, causing uprooting of a tree on Collem-Mollem road. A huge tree uprooted near Nawawada-Collem, blocking traffic for few hours. Later, locals and vehicle drivers cleared the road. Residents have complained that there are many huge trees along the Collem-Mollem road, which could uproot any moment. They have urged the concerned authorities to look into the matter and cut the trees, which are posing danger to the motorists.
