http://oheraldo.in/pagedetails.asp?nid=23452&cid=26 * * * Adarsh YC eager to maintain fine form MAPUSA - Adarsh Yuvak Sangh Saligao, a team that was hardly feared by their opponents a few years back, has proved this season that they can be strong force in the state scene with some commendable performances.Ever since its inception in 1984, Adarsh, more so, emphasised on meaningful social activities like helping the poor, the street children and so on. However, the club slowly took up inter-village football, a sport that can hardly be neglected in the state. Amidst strong clubs from Calangute, Anjuna, Siolim and Mapusa, Adarsh had a lot to mug up, especially in building up a strong team. If observed today, Adarsh has gained momentum to make itself one of the top clubs in Bardez. To prove it are the three titles they gained in quick succession in this season, namely the Colormax-Imperial Rolling Trophy, the Late V M Salgaocar Trophy and the Fr Chico Bayside Cup. Their ability to outwit strong opponents with a comprehensive margin has been the highlight of the Saligao outfit that consists of a perfect mixture of experienced and young players. Guided under ex-President Mr Pradeep Padgaokar, Adarsh were able to sign in some gifted players like Avelino Fernandes and Siddesh Kesarkar whose contribution to the club in this single season is unimaginable. The solidity provided by experienced Mohan Parab and Virismao Rodrigues in the defence gives the squad some air to breathe. Similarly, the expertise of Ajay Diwadkar and Banudas Rawal in the heart of the midfield ensures that their deadly striker Avelino is kept busy upfront with some crisp defence-breaking passes. Goalkeeper Lawrence Trinidade has been not less than a saviour for Adarsh with his heroics, especially at the time of tense tie-breakers. Mr Padgaokar and his hard working managing committee including Mr Anand Morajkar and Mr Deepak Navelkar have stepped down from their posts to make way for younger candidates to serve the club. Mr Eknath Oraskar has now taken charge as the president and hopes to keep the momentum going as they step into the new season. Its great to have been nominated as the president of a club like Adarsh Yuvak Sangh and for the first time its happed that a president has been assigned a tenure of 3 years. We usually restrict it to one year at Adarsh. So the pleasure is even more and I will strive to keep up the name of the club, said Mr Oraskar. Hardly having taken the president's role, Mr Oraskar has already taken steps to aid the betterment of the club by providing adequate land in Saligao to raise a club house. Our main priority at the moment is to raise a club house. Secondly, we want to raise our standards of play, keeping in mind the opportunities to be given to the youngsters. Lastly, we plan to hire a coach in the near future, added the newly elected president. With finance being an integral element in running a club, this is what Mr Oraskar had to say: We have been able to gather sponsors from various sources but our main source of income is the contribution of some money by all the club members every month. Besides, we also get help by means of efforts from several well wishers like Mr Laxmikant Kinalekar and Mr Deepak Navelkar, he added. For the coming season Adarsh have set their goals straight and that is to gain as many trophies as possible, something that every club desires to, but they aspire for something more. Definitely, we would like to perform exceptionally well but our motive will be to set a platform for youngsters to shine. We have been monitoring three local boys from which two have been finalised, concluded Mr Oraskar. * * * Saligao move up HERALD CORRESPONDENT Saligao move up HERALD CORRESPONDENT VASCO, JUNE 18 Saligao United Sports Club beat defending champions United Club of Telaulim 1-0 in the Al-Javeed Jewellers 36th Bandodkar memorial soccer at MPT ground, here on Thursday.
