Sir,
Subject : Kindly publish in " NT INBOX"
This is with reference to your editorial in todays' Navhind Times with the
above caption where you have pointed out that the government is making all out
efforts to encourage farmers to rejuvenate their paddy fields and switch over
to mechanised farming . But majority of the farmers are facing hardships and
difficulties after cultivating their fields. The reality is that bunds breach
and water keeps gushing into the fields and paddy crop gets submerged under
water resulting in poor crop or entire crop getting destroyed . This used to
not happen in the past because nullahs ( locally known as vhows) used to be
cleaned regularly and desilted prior to monsoons every year . This is not
being done and to add to it people keep throwing all sorts of non-
biodegradable garbage into the nullahs thus blocking them further.
Recently for example I sowed my field and the entire field is submerged under
water as the bandh seperating the nullah from the field has breached. As a
result all sorts of filth including plastics , glass bottles , glass pieces and
even medical syringes have come into my field. How does one expect us to
venture into the field with all these dangerous items getting dangerously
embedded into the soil.
Ofcourse your suggestion to grow vegetables is very good and maybe profitable
but right now government must do something about our traditional paddy
cultivation and our fields getting inundated under water as it is a complete
loss to us and if nothing is done will further discourage the farmers to grow
paddy crop in future.
I request the agriculture minister to issue directives to those responsible so
as to ensure that all nullahs are cleaned so that water can flow smoothly.
Thank you
Allwyn N.D'Souza.
