How apt! Much ado about nothing!....So let the Australians copy the English, &
we SaligaoNetters will leave out the "religion" & "politics".

Since I dont belong to any of the high risk group yet, ....neither pregnant,
nor fat, nor diabetic, nor a child, nor old (not too sure about this one)...I
am staying cool in this terribly hot & humid place.

I had a busy weekend gallivanting..... though not in crowded places of
course...you know.....swine flu & all??? - one of the precautions we are
advised about!....aside from the "dont shake hands", "dont hug & kiss" (best
form of greeting would be the pure Indian one "Namaste" with hands folded as in
prayer...oops! sorry, this comes under religon I guess!).

Have a good day & a good weekend. Forget all these alphabets & figures, else
one will invite other diseases under the heading - psychosomatic...... Am I
right Dr. Dilip?

Annette

In response to Dilip's email below, I do understand reasons of possible
outbursts after a stressful day and especially with the things he has to put
up with in his line of work. So actually no apologies required . And it takes
courage for one to make an early apology, and this itself enhances my respect
for such persons. Cheers Dilip.

May I add that in Pune, after the first swine flu death of a healthy young
student almost a month back and the panic it created, it was really admirable
to observe the dedication and long hours put in by the good doctors and nurses
at the Government hospital who have been risking their own lives and patiently
handling the thousands of people that came everyday for check ups and swab
tests, etc. And not more than 5% actually tested positive. Authorities and
newspaper ads were informing people not to panic, but nobody wanted to be in
the 1% category of deaths.

The flip side of all this is, with people becoming more aware of the spread of
viruses and precautions taken, Pune now seems to be a cleaner place. People
make sure they are not the ones who would spread any virus to others, they
collectively frown on people who may spit in public places, they now make a
noise if garbage bins are not collected and disposed off in time, etc.
Hospitals are having less in-patients, maybe because less people are falling
ill. A doctor friend was telling me that although this is peak season for the
common coughs and colds, he is experiencing less patients coming in with these
problems.

Although we can respect each other's differences, I continue saying my prayer
to which I include my gratitude for the good doctors, nurses and medical staff
who are dedicatedly going beyond the boundaries of their duties in helping curb
the spread of the deadly viruses . Dilip, this includes you too, do keep up the
good work.

Best regards,
Lloyd

I should apologise, and do, for the strong tone of my letter. Im sorry Lloyd.
My letter was too strong but was written just after I had battled through a
family of terrorised flu 'victims' who were insisting on tests and treatment
(very loudly, in Arabic) when they needed nothing. Let me explain:

Every day we face about 50 cases of flu in Dubai, mostly misinformed and
wanting this and that when in fact flu has no cure. Never has. And we dish out
printed sheets telling everyone not to panic. The current death rate from H1N1
worldwide is less than 1%. These people are elderly and infirm generally,
though we are all concerned about H1 N1 in pregnancy. There have been 5 deaths
in Dubai, 4 are pregnant women. The Australian experience ( they've had their
flu season) is best summed up by : much ado about nothing.

Tamiflu does not work too well. The WHO guidelines do not recommend the blanket
use of Tamiflu at all, and state that the evidence is weak. So don't go asking
for Tamiflu unless one is pregnant, very fat, very old or very young or has
other major health issues like severe diabetes. In these situations it MIGHT be
of use. A small californian company holds the trade rights to Tamiflu. Donald
Rumsfeld is a major shareholder. Yes, Donald Rumsfeld of Iraq 'we know what we
don't know' fame.

Seek medical help if you belong to one of the at risk groups I described above
or if you develop symptoms like shortness of breath, coughing up blood, light
headedness, drowsiness. H1N1 does not give you a skin rash. If you develop
fever and a skin rash contact a doctor pronto. Dont waste time in Cantare. If
one wishes to pray go ahead, but any words profoundly said should suffice.

Remember there are people who have killed their children by praying : the child
who needed insulin but received a prayer? The Jehovah's witnesses who regularly
refuse blood transfusions for their injured children? There are hundreds of
such cases. Religion and science are not bedfellows. Darwin was threatened with
death. Rushdie too, though he is no scientist, just a free thinker.

So pray if you will, but swine flu is almost always a trivial illness..... at
present. A mutation might occur soon that increases its lethality. But we are
busy developing a prayer that will tackle that problem, worry not.

PS: If any one wants references for my statements I will be happy to provide.

Dilip
