Marbrouk to Dominic & all others in his league. Always wondered why we never heard of the good football players once they had left the field. It is fitting that sportsmen of such calibre are honoured. Who doesnt remember Dominic? I saw his wife Theresa (she was a D'Gama) in January & automatically I remembered Dominic & the good old days of the football matches that we watched. Dominic was really swift & I have forgotten some of the others or dont remember their names - I guess I am not that literate with regard to such sports but I do recall some of the good players from Saligao like Francis & Newton D'souza. We never missed watching the matches at Oula etc. ...irrespective of whether the players were well known or not. A small Island like Bahrain has a team almost reaching the finals ... (No doubt they are playing against the countries that make up the leagues depending upon the population & area). I have watched the Bahrain Team playing often (albeit on T.V.) - they are good & some of our Saligao & Goan footballers were just as good if not better! Oh well! As Rico says, some of us arent very "literate" when it comes to Sports I guess so how could I judge who is good, better or best? Congratulations once again to Dominic & the others. FN 2009/12/22 Daniel F. de Souza <[email protected]> Today (22/12/2009) is the 50th Anniversary of the Goa Football Association. A grand celebration was held at Pinto's Wild Orchid, Majorda. Saligao's ace footballer Domnic Soares, and one of the finest dribbler Goan football has ever seen was felicitated by the GFA. He was selected by Goan football fans on the 'All star football team' from 1959 onwards. I met him at the function and personally congratulated him. The other footballer to get this honour were; Andrew, Brahmanand, Soccoro, Bruno Coutinho, Climax lawrence, Bernard, Nicholas, Derrick Pereira (both defenders), Mahesh Gawli, Babu Arolkar and others. Those of saligaonetters who are familiar with Goan football will remember him as the deadliest centre forward for Vasco sports club who was part of ABCD (Andrew-Catao-Bernard-Domnic) quartet of the 70s/80s. Domnic played for a while for Saligao Sporting Club too. And it was such a pleasure to watch him on the field specially his ability to dribble past a host of opponents and score effortlessly. He was a clean player with a soft touch and never committed a fowl intentionally.
