Daniel, thanks for reminding us of the others & adding to my knowledge. I
remembered Tony Martin (Donvaddo? Dola's brother?) but was not too sure. Dont
remember Denzil or Bebiano. Guess there are many others we dont know about or
cant recall. I seem to recall an Antao somewhere from Salcete.

& how could I have forgotten? Francis & all his brothers seem to have been
playing football at some time or the other.

I did read once about Goan footballers being amongst the best but since you
didnt mention this in your original mail, thought I was mistaken.

Congrats once again to all!

Merry Christmas & Happy New Year!

Annette

Since this is the Golden Anniversary of Goa Football Association it is
befitting we recall the ones (footballers & football administrators) from
Saligao who have made our village proud by their contribution to Goan football
at State, National and International level.Goa is today seen as the best
footballing State in the country. Bengal is now no longer the pride of Indian
football.

Goan football clubs have shown they can play better football.

Some names besides Domnic Soares that instantly come to my mind wrt football
from Saligao are :

Romeo Remedious (former international)
Francis D'Souza (former international & first Goan to play for outstation club
- Mohan Bagan)
Melvin D'Souza - (Footballer & FIFA Referee)
Roland D'Souza - (ex SBI Footballer & National Referee )
Tony Martin (Tata's Mumbai) - a deadly right footed striker
Denzil Franco (presently with Mahindra's & represented India in SAFF cup)
Bebiano Fernandes - (Sporting Club)

Netters can add to this list and highlight the contribution of many others

Sportingly
Daniel

Marbrouk to Dominic & all others in his league. Always wondered why we never
heard of the good football players once they had left the field. It is fitting
that sportsmen of such calibre are honoured.

Who doesnt remember Dominic? Isaw his wife Theresa (she was a D'Gama) in
January & automatically I remembered Dominic & the good old days of the
football matches that we watched. Dominicwas really swift & I have forgotten
some of the others or dont remember their names-I guess I am not that literate
with regard to such sports but I do recall some of the good players from
Saligao like Francis & Newton D'souza. We never missed watching the matches at
Oula etc....irrespective ofwhether the players were well known or not.

A small Island like Bahrain has a team almost reaching the finals...(No doubt
they are playing against the countries that make up the leagues depending upon
the population & area). I have watched the Bahrain Team playing often (albeit
on T.V.) - they are good & some of our Saligao & Goan footballers were just as
good if not better!

Oh well! As Rico says, some of us arent very "literate" when it comes to Sports
I guess so how could I judge who is good, better or best?

Congratulations once again to Dominic & the others.
