Hey Louis, Makes me nostalgic just reading your note, I just spoke to Gladstone, Leslie and Lawrie hoping to get you but just missed you. I told Lawrie and Gladstone that I felt left out and to send me some urrak, they are working on it. A while ago I had come accross a business card Maurice had given me, and called his home here, I spoke to his mum who told me he was in Goa. Good for him. Having started a chronicle of my regular visits to my favorite watering hole - Lawries over the last 4 or 5 trips, i have documented the people who i meet each time i visit there. Strangely i have had pics of everyone from Dilip aka cruisemissiles to Kenneth & Quentin (now in CAN) besides the reglulars like Gustav, Gladstone, Warren etc I even have some of Budza (BC - Before Cantare). I will have an album with a selection of photos printed out so that pilgrims following will be enlightened about the whereabouts of people long absent from Saligao. Guys feel free to add to them as you make your pilgrimage to Ferns. Have yet to sample the tastes and internal sights of Cantare - I will do this in due course Hope to put the photos up when i get back to AU sometime towards the end of the month. I suppose the trick is to get the balance right between giving a tantalizing taste of things yet telling it all - let us see what eventuates... Off to Margao for the rest of the week. Just to set the record straight, The old Podmonath Building was built by Vittorrinho Saldanha (my Great Grand pa) who didn't like the idea of Saligaokars having to go to Mapusa and Panjim to shop! He leased the place out to the Podmanath family (podmonaths father Camotim) to run as a shop/bar, I inherited it through my Grand Aunt Ursula Saldanha who had given up on the litigation that followed the tenancy Act in Goa. Once I got involved in 2000 it took me 6 years to get the building back and another 2 to renovate it. It is a little village taverna and meant to remain that way. Did visit Lawrie's too & as Daniel did, it was to say hello (not to have a drink) & I did meet that evening a couple of Saliganvkars there whom I had not met in ages. Across the road from each other but both Outlets have much to offer I guess .... the old & the new, the traditional & the modern, the "village type" & the "city type" meeting place. Peaceful co-existence....I like it! Each has its own type of visitors & clients, (Saliganvkars & others) both proprietors are cool, calm & confident.... Louis (D'Souza, Boxer) from over from Brisbane and we had a long chat this evening about the way Saligao was in the 1970s... 14 people travelling to Panjim in a taxi (I guess we all were thinner then... if we are to believe Louis' number, and my dad concurred), cycle-repairs at Parra fixed-wheel cycles with large axels, and much more. Does anyone remember the time Louis dressed as a Sikh (with a pale blue turban) and accompanied the chief guest to the Saligao Institute? Maybe 1980 or 1981... While ending the discussion, Louis mentioned that he had seen Cantare. His complaint: "But no one mentioned that it had been set up in the old Padmanabh's shop." Maybe that might have helped to imagine the location from afar! Louis also says he didn't see any photos of Cantare online.
