Thank you Rico for posting it on Saligao-net, the phones were down so this was a very thoughtful and timely gesture on your part. Annette, Zelma, Denis, Patsy and Melvyn - thank you for the condolences and kind words you posted on Saligao-net. Anthony Mascarenhas was a man of few words but many talents and a generous heart that never refused anyone in need. While some remember him for his singing, others recall him playing the accordion, violin, guitar, piano and melodica. Quite a few folk learnt music from him too. He wrote music for Maestro Lourdino Barretto and transcribed his compositions so that the music sheets could be used by a larger group of musicians in the Orchestra. He taught academics at the Mater Dei while still in his teens, and went on to have an outstanding career in British service in East Africa, retiring as the Superintendant of Posts - a seat reserved for only two Asians in those days of the Empire. While none of his generation are around now, there's the ever-cheerful Gerard Delaney of the much younger generation who was his bridge partner at some point. And the bridge sessions had to stop because there weren't any players anymore. Tennis was his passion in Africa, but after retirement and return to Goa it was impossible for him to pursue this sport. However, he did teach me table-tennis, which was the one sport I went on to earn medals in most local and state tournaments. And, yes, he loved animals. But because he consciously kept a low profile, people would commonly know him as Peggy's husband. I'll stay with this brief recollection, because that's the way Anthony would have liked it to be. >From Luella, Janice, Marita, Basil and myself (Rowena), we express our deep >gratitude to all who are with us in their prayers and who visited, condoled, >and helped in every way possible during the funeral. Thank you Rowena
