having faced the same dilemma as you, I approached the panchayat office
on Friday morning. I found the list of contesting candidates is posted
on the board there outside. There has been no active campaigning that I
have seen so far, but here are some interesting observations, that came
in from the local village grapevine.
there are a total of 27 candidates for 9 wards. 2 wards are ladies only.
ward 6 pequeno morod has a total of 6 candidates contesting including
sitting panch Eknath oraskar who is up against James Fernandes from the
citizens forum and others. James wife Milagrina who is the secretary of
the forum is contesting in ward 2 (cotula) which is a ladies ward. I
think she is up against the current panchs wife there.
In Donvaddo (ward 6) where you reside, Pramod ( the MLA's brother) is up
against some lady (Harmalkar I think), and Diago Fernandes the citizens
forum president.
In sonarbhat (ladies ward) there are two contesting - I dont know their
names.
In Salmona also, there are only 2 contesting - sitting panch Jack coehlo
is up against one Ballu I heard.
I fall in ward 9 where there are 3 contesting - Jasmine Fernandes (alias
silu - the cable TV providor for saligao and citizens forum treasurer)
he is up against one Borkar who stays opposite lillian & lorraine
d'costas house; and they are both up against the young enterprising
Nandanlal Kerkar (nandu) - a freelance accountant who is making his
first dip in the panchayat.
Interestingly I found that that sitting sarpanch and long - time panch
member Lucas remidious is not contesting but I overheard is backing a
few candidates.
There seem to be 3 panels that have been floated along with some
independents. - (again overheard at Dilips shop near the club, where one
gets lot of useful rumoured information. :-) )
We seem to have a lot of educated people sitting for election this time
around.
above data may please be verified at the list on the panchayat office as
I only browsed through till I came to ward 9 which I was interested in.
