*Saligao. 20 Jan.* The Govt. had notified 20 Jan as the day for the Elections to the Saligao Comunidade at 10 am. The atmosphere was Calm, Happy and Friendly. A large gathering of 63 Gaunkars were present and the Govt. Official detailed for the purpose, started the proceedings with a request for cooperation from all, so that he could conduct the proceedings smoothly. He was not at all disappointed with the response that he got. The Outgoing President Architect Dean D'Cruz also said a few words and requested all for their unity and cooperation. He also said that he hoped that the attendance at future meetings would also be of the same high level.There was only one name each proposed for the Treasurer, Attorney and President. Mr Austin da Gama was elected as Attorney, Mr Cyril Coelho as Treasurer and Brig.Ian da Costa was elected s President, all unopposed. Speaking after the Election results were announced Mr Teotonio D'Souza a senior Gaunkar of the Village urged all to cooperate with the New Committee as this was the first time in sixty years that such a unanimous election was witnessed in Saligao. He also said that Brig. Ian da Costa was an experienced, knowledgeable and hardworking officer who has had a very bright career and is open minded. We should take advantage of the situation. He wished the New Committee all the best and success in their undertakings. Rev. Fr. Joseph Dantas who came from Sawantwadi said that he knew Brig. Ian da Costa from his days in Pune many years ago and said that we were lucky to have him as the President. In reply Brig Ian da Costa said that he was overwhelmed by the show of unity and cooperation witnessed today and that he would do his best to improve Saligao Comunidade and fight for our rights and try and restore the old glory of the Saligao Comunidade. He would give off his best and asked for the help and May God Bless Saligao.tion of all.
