The Mae de Deus church was built in 1873. The centenary began in November 1972 and the statue of our lady on the middle altar was taken down and then taken to all the chapels in Saligao. The statue was kept there overnight. Heavy statue made of strong bark of a tree. People from different religions took part in this programme. I rememer Dilip Kamat's father had conducted a bajan in the st cajetan's chapel.

ANNETTE D'SOUZA <[email protected]> wrote: Hi Rico Heard about the Festival from a friend & something about our Church "to be paintedebut "not being painted" at this special point in time. How far this is true I wouldnt know. After all rumours always fly around! Strange! Thought our Church came under "Goa Heritage" & is on the "Tourist Map". AND our Minister for Tourism is from Saligao........anyway!..... Last I recall was that the Church celebrated 100 years way back when I was in college in 1973(so couldnt forget the connection)..... read somewhere the date as 26/11/1873. That would make it 140 years on 26/11/2013. Could you please correct me if I have erred since in this Article/Press Release, it is mentioned "125 year-old heritage structure". Do I understand that the structure was started 140 years ago but said structure is deemed to be a heritage structure in the last 125 years? It is a pity that I am missing the Festival - The Press Release inclusive of the Programme Highlights makes interesting reading. Looking forward to reading about it hereafter. All the best to one & all......Wish you all an interesting & enjoyable 4 days.
