The feedback on the Festival seems good with kudos being offered to the Sarpanch, MLA & those who worked towards making it a success, irrespective of "concerns" regarding the Saligao Church being used as backdrop, etc.. Have noted comments of Nicholas(courtesy of M&M - acting postmen???). At least to me, the picture is clearer. Communication is the safest way to avoid misunderstandings & rumours I guess. Thanks Ashley, M&M & others in Saligao for information in detail,... it helps those of us, not around, put a perspective on things & give credit where credit is due & that would include Clive even if I do not know him. With regard to contributions & not using the available Funds, May is right in that we have been blessed.....As far as I know, we Saliganvkars (in Saligao & around the globe) have been sponsoring and contributing in whatever way, towards funds, for maintainenance, all the small & big jobs through the years. Guess all this is not known by all because donors dont always "let the right hand know what the left is doing" .....sometimes donating anonymously???!!! I also recall Mrs. Isa Vaz once informing that lists are sent abroad through various Saliganvkars & donations are made accordingly. That was one time I refused to carry such a list due to previous "non-receipt" of relevant receipt as required by some donors. One more misunderstanding (lack of communication again???) was cleared at that time & all is water under the bridge now. Annette

Each of us has been blessed by Mae de Deus and no matter how big or small an amount, i think that each of her children around the globe should be able to contribute to make this possible. Thank you. Are we saying that we need an MLA or Government to maintain the historic Mae De Deus Church? We go asking for funds to these people, for lights painting hotmixing, they inturn demand their pound of flesh. We have a powerful God, he looks after the sparrows, so will he not provide for his Church, are there not enough people who will contribute in small and big ways to ensure the Church stands tall and maintained in its original glory. Why do we have to depend on the MLA's When the illumination and repainting was done did the MLA ask the PP for permission, I doubt it, so when he wants to use the Church as a back drop he will do the same, he believes he has a right to do so. After all MLA's believe that when Government money is spent under their watch it is their money and they are doing society a favour, be it painting a church or hotmixing a road. This is a good opportunity for the Church, any Church to think before they accept the handouts from MLA's. Have we not heard Priests praising the MLA's of the day for doing this or that work for the church as it it the MLA's personal money. Stop and think. The results are there for you to see. Today they are using the picture as a backdrop, tomorrow they will have it in the Church itself. And please do not think this is a communal decision, it is simply economic. Someone is going to make big money, no prizes for guessing. As usual Catholics are involved, because the religion is "money". This is a matter of great concern as the tourism minister says he needs no permission from the parish priest or any church authority to use the church as a backdrop for the programme. The question that I raised in the newspaper was in the light of this problem (see attachment from Herald). What I am referring to is that, when the illegal petrol pump was coming up, we were fighting to protect the church as a Heritage site. The local MLA/minister and the panchayat did not stop it. Secondly, the illumination of the church was not working for the past 6 months. At Christmas and New Year, the outside of the church was in darkness. When we made a noise about it in the newspapers, the MLA/minister got angry. Earlier, he did not repair the lights in spite of being notified about it. Now that he is having his own programme, he has started repairs just 2 days ago. He is repairing them for his motives. Is this right? Spending Rs. 3.5 lakhs, the church has been painted and maintained by its own committee. When the hotmix project for the church parking-lot was passed, the MLA/minister was the one who objected to it, but we managed somehow to get it done. When the persons concerned Clive Sequeira and Nicholas Sequeira came to our parish priest they spoke about using the church as a backdrop for the Heritage Festival. Father requested them to apply in writing for the permission as our church is a private church. We maintain the church by ourselves, without any financial assistance from the government. So how can they use our church as a background for their programme? Till date no permission is sought, but the work of the festival is in full swing. Who is the owner of the church, who is in charge of it? And now, at whose cost is the minister for tourism using the church to promote this festival? The minister says, "I do not need to ask permission from father to use the church as a backdrop". Is this not dadagiri to over ride church authority? Our brothers Clive Sequeira and Nicholas Sequeira knowing the facts, are party to this heritage programme. Is this right on their part to deny and defy their parishioners and the villagers? As responsible villagers of Saligao and parishioners of Mae de Deus church are we not to raise this issue? Is there no respect for the religious sentiments of us catholics? Are we to be taken for granted by the government, our MLA/tourism minister in our village? Fr Dominic Sequeira Asst.
