*SALIGAO:* Saligao locals have questioned the government’s hurry in going ahead with the garbage treatment plant that is proposed to come up on the Saligao-Calangute plateau despite stiff opposition from the comunidade of Saligao, the Concerned Citizens of Saligao and the parish priest. Addressing a press conference, the locals sought to know why the government was in a hurry to push the project even when there was a proposal which was accepted in the Assembly 10 years ago to set up a waste treatment plant at Colvale. Tulio D’Souza, member of Concerned Citizens of Saligao, said that this is a major issue and therefore the people should be taken into confidence before going ahead with the project. “Why choose Saligao when there is a long pending High Court direction to clear the site where the project is proposed to come up. The court has instructed Calangute panchayat to look for an alternative place and hand over the area to the forest,” he said. He said that the European technology is good for their climate but it will not suit us. “Even the Europeans know how to dispose of and segregate garbage. We in Goa mix all kind of garbage together so it will definitely not suit us,” he said pointing out that even on the regional plan sites are shown for garbage treatment plants. Ex-president of comunidade of Saligao Dean D’Cruz said that the proposed site had once big quarries but now the area of 60,000 square metre is littered with garbage. He said the High Court had instructed the Calangute panchayat to maintain a record of garbage trucks going to the site and fence the area and that there was also instruction to clear the garbage or burn it. “Calangute panchayat was instructed to revert the site to the forest department once the garbage was cleared but the High Court order is being violated,” he alleged. Present president of Saligao comunidade Ian D’Costa said that Saligao comunidade had its extra-ordinary meeting on Sunday wherein the gaonkars opposed the proposed project and instructed the committee not to give the land to the government. He said the comunidade has not received any proposal over land acquisition for the project but only a letter which says that the government wants to set up a waste treatment plant. When asked what if the government imposes clauses 4 and 17 to acquire land, he said, “Let them do it we will see.” He said the new land acquisition law says that 80 per cent of the people have to agree for the same. He said there are already problems due to foul smell emanating from the site where the garbage is dumped and the Salmona spring has also contaminated. “When we have a seminary and pharmaceutical companies how will it be possible to have a garbage plant,” he asked Even the panchas Flory and Dayanand are against the project and have accused the sarpanch of going to the chief minister and not taking them into confidence. Flory, who represents ward 7, which is most effected, say that the wells in the ward are contaminated due to garbage dumping. Ex-chief minister Dr Wilfred D’Souza said that garbage is not a new issue but it was taken up by him when he represented Saligao. He said instead of sending 17 people to Germany why not bring those experts to Goa.
