Criminal couple held for break-in TNN Oct 12, 2013, 03.48AM IST CALANGUTE: A history-sheeter couple from Udupi, with crimes including break-ins to their names in Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, Kerala and Andhra Pradesh, have been arrested by Calangute police for breaking into the house of Adolph D'Souza in Saligao on September 13.
On October 3, alert neighbours caught and handed over to the police Nagaraj alias Gopal Shetty as he tried to break into another house in Saligao. The woman with him however got away. Aware about the accomplice from Shetty's confession, police kept a look out for her at the bail and remand proceedings at court. When she turned up with a lawyer to bail her husband out, they questioned her on suspicion and arrested her. In custody, she confessed to robbing D'Souza's house, said police, adding that they have recovered from the couple's rented premises at Arradi, Candolim, some of the D'Souza family's stolen goods, including Australian dollars and UK pounds, a cyber camera and handy cam, and 31,000. Since some of the foreign currency was exchanged to purchase consumer electronic items, police have also attached the TV, fridge, Tata Sky connection, etc. Investigations, meanwhile, have revealed that the couple is wanted in all the South Indian states. Shetty is even accused of murdering a fellow inmate, Vinod Shettigar, while in an Udupi sub-jail in 2011. The wife, meanwhile, has been his escape strategist. In Shimoga, she and her brothers locked three of the four court toilets, leaving the lone one with its grills cut. An alert escort officer foiled Shetty's escape. In Udupi, while the police escorting them slept in another room, the duo escaped from the first floor hotel room by climbing down a rope of bed-sheets. Calangute PSI Devyani Naik who is investigating said the couple has been booked under IPC Sections 457 and 380. Gopal has been remanded to seven days police custody while his wife has been remanded to five. http://articles.timesofindia.indiatimes.com/2013-10-12/goa/42968058_1_udupi-saligao-stolen-goods Section 457 in The Indian Penal Code, 1860 457.
