CM asks Saligaokars not to oppose garbage treatment plant for Bardez coast

CALANGUTE: Chief minister Manohar
Parrikar<http://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/topic/Manohar-Parrikar>
made
an impassioned plea to residents of Saligao not to oppose the garbage
treatment plant (GTP) proposed atop the Saligao-Calangute hillock. He
interacted with villagers at the Saligao panchayat ghar on Saturday morning
at a meeting convened to explain the technology being adopted for the GTP.

Tourism minister and Saligao MLA Dilip Parulekar, environment minister
Alina Saldanha, Calangute MLA Michael Lobo and Saligao sarpanch Eknath
Oraskar were also present along with the GIDC MD Sanjit Rodrigues and

 chairman Levinson
Martin<http://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/topic/Levinson-Martin>.
A large number of villagers attended the meeting.

Following the presentation, villagers expressed overwhelming support for
the GTP and urged the CM to expedite the work. Saligao comunidade members,
including president Ian D'Costa, attorney Dean D'Cruz and others also
supported the setting up of the GTP, but urged the CM to look at an
alternative site atop the plateau.

The CM also agreed to consider their proposal.

Sanjit Rodrigues made a power-point presentation about his experience
handling the garbage woes of
Panaji<http://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/topic/Panaji> and
how the proposed technology would be the best, following which Manohar
Parrikar made a strong pitch for the GTP, which was followed by a
question-and-answer session with the villagers.

A few villagers applauded the efforts by the CM to set up the GTP, while
some raised queries about the efficiency of the proposed GTP in the light
of past failures in garbage management in the state. Parrikar also
clarified that the GTP at Saligao-Calangute is only meant for the Bardez
coastal tourist belt. "It's not going to treat garbage of entire North Goa.
We will have two-three more GTPs in the north and in the south. It's just
that we have to start somewhere," he said.
