Ashley, Good morning
Yep was corrected last night if you check my mail this morning. & I have apologised too...for the mistaken identity. With the time difference... you were probably asleep last night (my time) & I was asleep this morning (your time)[😱] My opinion & views havent changed though. I will leave the subject to "those in the know" Have a nice day! All the best! Dont know about ignorance but definitely I can identify my feelings with those of others who were attacked - whether by pets or "home" dogs of others, or strays - dogs & cats. 1) We have the same sort of problem here with stray dogs hurting humans & getting into compounds & killing hens etc. & eating...after all they need to eat eh? However when animals are hungry they get testy too hence the problem? Even when children tease, the strays retaliate....why go far, even pets retaliate sometimes..... ---the same system is being applied or already applied..that of catch, sterilise, vaccinate & back among the community - humans & animals. However, there is no such system for stray cats yet. Perhaps it is in the offing? I dont know. 2) Guess most of you have been lucky enough not to have been attacked by such animals. Already mentioned my tryst with the pet dog (not my pet let me make it clear but belongs to others). However that was as recent as a year ago. & unlike some "children" I dont tease or irritate any animals, I just go on my way. So lucky are you & others who have strays as friends & eating out of your hands & playing with you & the children & being fed by you all. Great going! The stray cats foraging for food outside our buildings also come under "animals"? Perhaps you will realise why I prefer not to have strays around whether sterilised or not especially when you have more than 2 coming towards you......fear of them all as opposed to the time when we only were involved with pets at home whom we thought the world of & all the rest. Got out of my building & the stray cat just jumped on my foot & scratched me. Had to visit the Hospital, take the tetanus injection & deal with the wound. A year later a stray cat outside our building (could have been the same one & probably liked the skin on my foot?[😱]) bit me. - Both times, the hospital wrote the report - scratched by Cat (claws?) bitten by Cat- (teeth?) Back again to the Hospital to deal with the wound & given another tetanus shot & the forte one lasting for 5 years. Glad to say nobody bit me or scratched me in those 5 years.[😊] Hereafter I give all strays a wide berth. Both experiences make me alert... if I see more than one stray animal I tip toe around them or wait for them to move if there is enough time. Take care! Again! All the best in all your endeavours & those of your colleagues. Guess the laws were not enforced before as I have seen dogs being shot which wouldnt have been as humane as euthansia eh? Dare I say that other animals were shot too? My suggestion "putting to sleep" as being humane was in response to the word "shooting" being used in original mail. Made me see red. Also we have had dogs as pets through the years & they lived well & long. Best friends they were!. However, if the programme was in force from beginning, then from where did the stray dogs atop the hill come? Things have changed now, I realise that. Dont be appalled because that is how things were ..I am talking about 50 years ago......I recall mention made of dogs from the hills, coming down to the village & then considered as strays. Anyway, you & others (as I have read now) do your best. But for your information, there were no people dealing with stray animals during the years I am talking about. Life has changed, world has changed.... So we did our best. AND for the record, if my mail was read well, I havent euthanised animals because they were stray but because they were sick or at the request of the Vet. All the best to you, Helen & all Teams on the JOB. Hon’ble Supreme Court Orders Implementation of Animal Birth Control Rules. Order to humanely control street dog population welcomed by Humane ... You cannot kill, put-to-sleep, euthanise or otherwise deny life to the street and stray dogs in India. Supreme court ruling - and you'd better believe it or you're gonna face serious action! Ideally you should get your local panchayat to work with the designated NGOs (there are many in Goa) to spay/neuter them, start local feeding programs for them and have them treated and well looked after. That's the correct thing to do. Stray and street dogs do NOT cause any problems if properly cared for and treated well. If vaccinated and kept looked-after can in fact help solve many problems. And they have rights too: https://jaagruti.org/information-to-empower-you/indian-street-dogs-and-their-rights/ So - for those of you on this list that're of the opinion that "these are stray animals & as such it would be humane to put them to sleep" and "my premise being that the health & safety of humans come first ".... "So what is the worry about the strays being sent to "kingdom come" humanely?".... I beg to disagree. Please understand the law and go by the law! Street dogs have their rights - just as you have yours. I say this as someone who has lived in Saligao once and a current Animal lover and activist! And I am frankly appaled at the ignorance and lack of knowledge about something as fundamental as "mans' best friend" - on this list! Hopefully the meeting in Mapuca will explain this to all of you'll and I would expect that Normal Alvares and the PFA Team will explain to you'll what can and should be done. And how. FYI - I'm currently working with Animal Rights people and Animal Welfare NGOs in South Goa and elsewhere to implement humane methods to ensure that the stray dogs and humans can co-exist peacefulu and with the least friction. And personally I have been working with a lovely pack of 9 dogs in my residential area in Nuvem for the last year or so - to great effect. From everyone being suspicious and often terrified of them (as is often the case with the unknown) - they're everyone's friends now, everyone feeds them and the building kids have a lovely time playing with them every evening! Need more info on what you can do and how - let me know. Mail me off-list and I will reply. But I just had to post this as I think the info going-around on the list is appalling! To say the least!
