Well done and hats off to all the Saligoakars who are vigilant and concerned about preserving the identity of our village. It is also heartening to see that the elected members of the Panchayat were part of this ‘conservation effort’. It is a good trend that the people, the Communidade, the Panchayat members and the M.L.A, are working together. What we normally see is a great ‘divide’ between the people and the elected representatives but Saligao is heading in the right direction whereby we see a joint effort to save our village. My faith is reaffirmed that elected representatives can join forces with the common people for a better tomorrow. Once again bravo and thanks to our concerned Saligaokars.

There are already a few stalls and eateries and no parking place. This stretch is used by joggers and there could be an accident one day if bar and restaurants are allowed on this road. The delegation which included the Saligao sarpanch, 3 panchas and the attorney of the Saligao Communidade, complained about a proposed Saligao Night Market. The problem was discussed thoroughly with everyone, including the MLA, Sarpanch, panchas, Communidade Attorney and villagers agreeing with one voice that Saligao does not need a night market. In fact, everyone listed and agreed on the serious dangers and numerous problems that this needless night market will bring in. Various villagers, including the MLA pointed out how such night markets, being tourist attractions, destroy Goa's villages in ways that cannot be repaired. The MLA assured the delegation that as a policy, he does not support night markets. He had earlier messaged: “My stand is clear that I don't endorse night markets that will kill the peaceful village life of Saligao. My dream is to recognise Saligao as a Heritage Village. I am for a market which will encourage agricultural produce and artisans self-help groups, etc. I want a designated and a dedicated market for fish, for vegetable.” The Panchayat and Communidade have firmly decided not to issue NOCs to the night market. The MLA is strongly backing these decisions. All the 3 authorities assured the delegation that the proposed Saligao Night Market will not happen. The Panchayat and Communidade are also working on a day market for Saligao agricultural produce and other village products, as well as a Food Court that will house all the illegal gaddos that are mushrooming in the village. Those present were Lafira Remedios Gomes (Sarpanch), Daya Kudnekar (panch), Daya Mandrekar (panch), Lucas Remedios (panch), Austin D'Gama (Attorney of Saligao Communidade), Ramesh Ghadi, Mario Mascarenhas, Nicholas Sequeira, Vimla D'Souza, Pradeep Padgaonkar, Marjorie D'Sa, Pradip Parulekar, Muriel D'Souza, Suhail Kiran and Dean D'Cruz.
