HISTORY OF MUDD-DAVADDI--I.

In the " Etimos das aldeias" by Canon F.X.Vaz in Oriente Portugues( 1916 and 1920), MURDAVADDI( Murdo-vaddi) means hamlet on the mound or knoll.. The name of the ward is registered in documents of 27th March, 1759 of the Comunidades de Saligao as MURDAVADY. Interesting to note that it underwent changes, accordingly changing ‘R" into "DD" However the documents of St. Anne’s chapel of 1876, the earliest baptism register of Nagoa Church and the map of Saligao designed by Mr. Joao Salustino de Souza in 1923 show the name of the ward as MURDAVADI This change has certainly come in late twenties or thirties and in nineties this ward is called outsiders settled in Saligao ,as MUDD-DAVADDO. Property wise Mudd-da-vaddi is also called Dactembatta . It is also referred in earlier property documents as ‘Sucalbattulem".

The earlier inhabitants of this ward must have been Senai or Shenvi. The pointer to this is the name that was on people’s lips calling the ward Xin-vaddo since pre-portuguese times.

.*The Dividing line of the Ward: The brook which runs from the Communidade de Saligao through the middle of this ward divides this ‘vaddi ‘into two, called " Daktti Murdavaddi and Vhoddli-Murdavadi." When Tabravaddo was not in in existence, Mudd’davaddi extended further to the east of the chapel.and beyound the fields The place where the chapel of St. Anne’s stands was called Predio batta which was part of Murda-vady in bygone centuries.. However when Tabravaddo came into existence prior to18th century this" Predio batta" was placed in Tabravaddo ( till 1756 the name Tabravaddo was not registered in the Communidade de Saligao) though it probably existed due to the presence of Tavoras from whom it gots in name separating it from the Bekerichem Ghor which is in Mudd’davaddi. Hence Church Documents says that the Capela de Santa Ana is in Tabravaddo( Vide Anuario da Arquidiocese de Goa e Damao para 1955, Page 187).

*Property names: Some names of the properties of Mudd’ddvaddi are ‘ Predio Palmar called Quiterachem batta, Palmar called Sutcarvaddo, Modvacho vaddo( both these must be ‘namoxins’ field given to carpeners and washermen) , Sucabattulem, Predio Maponga, Dosscapatteachem Palloum, Poriato, Sitareachem batta,Chittarachem batta, Dovornem, Girbatta, Anxetta, Predio Temrem, Motiachem Batta, Palmar Murdavaddi and Palmar Batta( Vide, Indice Real de Saligao).

*The Marques’ Chapel: The Chapel of Sao Jeronimo( Saint Jerome) was erected on 215th June, 1729 and was rebuilt probably by Fr. Jose de Jesus Maria Marques in 1771. This private chapel was attached to his house. The Marques family( originally Fernandes) were descendants of Antonio Marques, ‘gauncar’ of Chorao and Maria de Mendonca(1668).It has a ‘jono’ of Saligao( Vide Souvenir of Saligao, 1873-1973, Mae de deus Church, Saligao, Goa especially the article written by Monsenhor F.X.Gomes Catao, ‘ The Church and Chapels of Saligao’ ).

*The Dodd-de Zonkar ( Double zonkar):’The’culacharins’ and the ‘interessados’ by exigencies of the various services were called on to share in the interests of the Association( Communidade)’,says the book of Communidades de Chorao, Ilhas and continues: ‘ They were all inhabitants of Ilhas except Fernandes and Marques of Saligao, the only "estrangeiros"( outsiders). These culacharins are brahmins and of full ‘zon’( dividend) like the gauncares( Chorao) and registered at the age of 14". Here in Saligao, Marques and Fernandes belong to the 10th vangodd of the Communidade de Saligao and received zonn of this communidade. At the age of 12 complete.

In bygone centuries the Marques and Fernandes of 10th vangodd of Saligao gave services for Choddnekars in building some bundhs in Chorao and therefore they were registered on account of these services rendered to them as ‘brahmin culacharins of the Communidade de Chorao.’,hence they are called double-zonkars( dodde-zonnkar)

These double zonnkar Fernandes of 10th Vangodd celebrate every year the feast of Sao Bartolomeu, in the Capela de Santa Ana de Saligao every year on 24th August, feast day of St. Bartolomew.. On the right hand-side niche of the main altar of Santa Ana, there is the image of Sao Bartolomeu placed there by the Dodd-de or Zodde-zonnkar Fernandes

In the Communidade the Saligao there are other Fernandes belonging to the 12th Vangodd. They only zonnkar of the Comunidade de Saligao and has nothing to do with the Communidade de Chorao.

*School: In the house of late Professora Filomena D’Souza( nicknamed ‘ Bekeriger’), classes were conducted for "Primeiro grau and Segundo grau" in Portuguese. She was assisted by the late Fr. Caetano Maria Rodrigues from Cotula.

*Crosses: Most of the wards in Saligao have their capelinhas’( small chapels), but not Mudd’davaddi. However the ward is dotted by nearly a dozen crosses. In the month of May the families attached to these crosses celebrate their cross feast preceded by recitation of the rosary, litany and hymns relating to the Holy Cross. Fomerly the masses were celebrated in the Capela de Santa Ana. Now the eucharistic sacrifice is celebrated near the cross with the permission of the proper authorities.
