HISTORY OF MUDD’DAVADDI—II.

IMPORTANT OFFICES: The Saligao Post office, Communidade de Saligao Building., Fish Market( Tintto), Shopping Centre are all situated in Mudd’ davaddi. After Integregation, the Panchayat Office, Community hall, Offices of Health, Electricity, Telephone Department are all located in this ward. The first rice mill was started some 80 years back by Mr. Graciano D’Souza. When it was closed then another rice and flour mill was run by Shri Bonvondas situated along the Chogm road now almost 58 years back. Saligao Sporting Club has its own building and Gymnasium

as well as Adarsh Yuwah Sang in the ward..

*Sports:.

The village sports-men did not lag behind in sports of their choice. It would be tedious if one attempted to mention all the sports-men who have brought laurels to the village. The three wards attached to St. Anne chapel have provided their share in this field. They below given are sports personalities from Murddavaddi.

*Football; Felix D’Souza, popularly known as ‘ Porque’ was a well built and powerful man who kept goal for the village eleven. The Fernandes brothers, Bento , Marshall and Felix played with their cousins Brigadier George and late Jack for there school and college at Nagpur. Casimiro and Juliao D,Mello added strength to the village team. The late Casimiro and Joe Fernandes were solid in defence. Brothers Paulito, Blasco and Mauricio Fernandes made a good combination. The late Hubert and Sunny Rodrigues were prominent footballers. Mahadev and Dormo also shone in football.

*Hockey. The late Dr. Eric D’Mello played big hockey in Bombay and captained the famous Club of Goans in Bombay " The Lusitanians XI". The late Leandro Fernandes played regularly for the Lusitanians of Calcutta for the Beighton Cup.

*Badminton: Agile and sprightly Joe Fernandes was an outstanding player in badminton and was the individual champion for many years in the Kenya open tournament at Mombasa.

*Boxing: In the thirties when Goans were not attracted to this sport , Caetano Rozario Fernandes, known in boxing circles as " Cajirose" was a popular pugilist. The late Casimiro Fernandes was a good boxer in East Africa and encouraged the sport when he came down to Saligao.

*Cricket: Brig. George D’Souza, the late Marshall and Felix Fernandes were good cricketers in school and college. Oscar Fernandes played cricket overseas and is present the local authority in the game. Felix Fernandes was also good in Volleyball and also coach at Salgaokars.

*Body Building: A new sport on the Goan horizon in which Shri Dayanand Harmalkar is an established body builder. Winner of various titles at the local, state and inter-state level, he has brought fame to Saligao and the various trophies are a testimony to his ability.

The above list needs lot of upgrading. Saligao Sporting Club, Adarsh Y. Sangh ans well united Saligao have their own teams in Saligao. Saligao Sporting Club has other tournaments in Carrom and Table-tennis for members and selected schools of Bardez.
