St.Peter schurch
St.Peters Basilica also called St.Peters church in Vatican City, is the
worlds largest Christian Church. It is the second church to stand above the
Crypt (Tomb) believed to hold the body of St.Peter the first Pope.
St.Peters is built in the shape of a cross. The church is 700 ft (210
metres) long and 450 ft across at its widest point. The center aisle is 150
ft high. The buildings most outstanding architectural feature is its
magnificiant dome designed by Michelangelo. The dome rises more than 400 ft
from the floor and measures 138 ft in diameter. The exterior church was
given impressive setting by Gian Lorenzo Bernini. There is a large open
space in front of the church called St.Peters square or Piazza di San
Pietro was completed in 1667 and contains two fountains and two colonnades.A
red granite obelisk (shaft) stands 85 ft high in the piazzas center. It was
brought to Rome from Egypt about 37 AD and was moved to the piazza in 1586.
