The interior church is decorated in baroque style . Bernin who was also a
sculptor created many of its famous features in 1650s. He built the
elaborate bronze baldacchino(canopy) over the main alter which stands
beneath the dome. Bernin also designed papal tombs and monuments for the
church. Marble, gilding and mosaic decorate the walls and ceilings. Chapels
, altars and tombs line the walls. Michaelangelos famous sculpture The
Pieta stands in one of the chapels.
