Dear Dr Dilip Joe DaCruz, > Like so many 'expats', I make my way to home to Saligao almost once every > year. And > each year the number of friends waiting to greet me drops. The > last few years have seen > only Alfie left. He was the last link I had with > those heady times.
Don't worry about that! You can keep adding to the list too. And cyberspace is here to make it easier. Nice to see the number of people posting increase. (Hint: silent readers, please post a line or two!) Because of the age gap (even two years is huge when you're a kid!) I kept reading your messages but mixed you up with your other brother(s)! Only on reading your touching post about Alfie did I realise you were a medico based in the UK! Of course I knew your younger siblings. I think Zeenat (hope I recall the name right) was about three classes senior, with Jennifer Figueiredo, Marlene, and the others. Of course, I could be wrong on this. In the Saligao of the 'seventies, the younger kids didn't fool with the bigger ones... unless you had a bigger sister or brother in their class! Or, you just got out of their way... > Alfie turned up in Bombay in 1975 with lots of friends. I remember Django and > Chris. > They were living in Mahim, I think, and were painting the town > red. We formed a close > friendship re-inforced by others of the > generation - Maxwell, Henry, Suri and Kenny etc > who were in saligao. > After the tragedy of Idi Amin in Uganda, I began to feel I had a new > home. So many familiar names. Chris was and is a good friend. Django is Christine's brother, whose neices have become swimming champs and models in Goa, isn't it? Where is he now? I have argued elsewhere, that Saligao got a new lease of life in the 'seventies with the influx of so many Africanders. It was as if the village, which was used to out-migration of its best and brightest for decades, had come to life again... Thank you for taking the time off your busy schedule to make the posts and share your insights (specially from the medical perspective) with all of us.
