It was Monday (26.6.2006) evening when the phone rang. A message from
home said, "There's pandamonium around here." I heard the kids chatter
excitedly in the background.

But the sad news was that there was a tragedy in the vaddo.

Later, it emerged that one of the young men swimming in the
Donvaddo-Sonarbhat pond had drowned. The fire engine was called, and
the police were on the scene. The kids were more excited with seeing
the fire-brigade in the village, and seeing it get stuck along the
'bund' road.

The next day, the school told them about the tragedy, and cautioned
all the children to be cautious again.

Apparently, the 26-year-old man who had died was from Parra.

There were different versions of why the death had taken place. It
could have been due to alcohol. But diving into the pond from the
fairly high walls might not be safe either, given that the water is
actually quite shallow, and might not have the depth to break the
fall.

Whatever the case, we at Saligao could do with more safety measures
and caution. FN
