Members working against party's interest to be expelled, says NCP NT Staff Reporter Panaji, March 23 The executive meeting of the Nationalist Congress party (NCP) in Goa today resolved to expel from the party any NCP member found working against the party's interests in any of the constituencies during the run-up to the forthcoming assembly elections. The resolution follows reports that a NCP member is covertly working against the party's interests in Saligao – the constituency of the party chief, Dr Wilfred de Souza himself. But in an informal chat with reporters after the meeting, Dr de Souza said the resolution is not a "hokum" (diktat) and that if anybody is to be expelled from the party, a laid down set of rules will have to be followed. Reacting to media reports that his party member, Mr Ulhas Naik had attended the election office inauguration of Mr Trajano D'Mello in Saligao, Dr de Souza clarified that Mr Ulhas Naik had been sacked from the party about one year back at the instance of national party president Mr Sharad Pawar. "He is nobody in the party," Dr de Souza said. Dr de Souza strongly advocated the Congress-NCP alliance for the forthcoming assembly elections in Goa. He said that he met the general secretary of the All India Congress Committee, Ms Margaret Alva in Mumbai on March 9 and gave her a list of 10 constituencies from where the NCP wants to contest the elections. These 10 constituencies are where the NCP is working against the BJP candidates. Ms Alva was supposed to study the list and get back to him. But she flew to the United States soon after and has reportedly just arrived. "It is high time we met for a discussion," Dr de Souza said. "Both the NCP and the Congress know the consequences of division of votes during the municipal elections in Mumbai. It is also important to keep the communal elements out of power," Dr de Souza said. While he had no talks with local Congress leaders about the proposed alliance, Dr de Souza said the Chief Minister, Mr Pratapsingh Rane had sought to meet him but the meeting could not happen due to Mr Rane's busy schedule. He also said that the NCP leader and Minister for Civil Aviation, Mr Praful Patel was due to arrive in Goa around March 28 for laying the foundation stone of the new terminal at Dabolim airport. When asked what he would do if the alliance does not happen, Dr de Souza said the NCP has the capacity to field candidates in all 40 constituencies of Goa. On this occasion, the election office of Mr D'Mello was inaugurated at Guirim by Fr Braz Faleiro SJ and it was followed by a public meeting. Speaking on the occasion Fr Faleiro criticised the present day MLA's and ministers for destroying the state for their selfish interests. South Goa Nationalist Congress Party leader, Mr Ulhas Naik sprang a surprise by turning up for the meeting. Addressing the large gathering of around 1500 people who had turned up, Mr Naik came down heavily on the sitting MLA of Saligao and NCP state president for destroying Saligao, NCP party and the entire state. He said it was high time now that people voted for a change and brought in new faces by sending home all the old warhorses . He felt that these elections would be crucial as they would determine the future of the state, especially as the present leaders have been tainted on account of the regional plan. The regional plan was out to destroy the state and benefit only a selected few and their families, felt Mr Naik. Ex-HOD and Hindi professor of St. Xavier's, Prof A P Tripathi also sought the victory of Trajano. He said in spite of his narrow defeat in the last elections, Mr Trajano has continued with the good social work. Speaking on the occasion, Mr Trajano announced his candidature officially and promised that his services will always be available for the well-being and development of Saligao. Claiming that no one else knew the sitting Saligao MLA better than him, Mr D'Mello questioned the development in Saligao for the last 20 years. He urged the people to think and exercise their franchise this time by voting either for public development or self-development. Among those who also spoke were Mr Marcelino Franco, Ms Alima Monteiro, Ms Mary Fernandes, Mr Dayanand Mandrekar, Mr Subhash Morajkar, Mr Savio Soares and others. Mr Dipesh Naik compered while Mr Francisco Rodrigues proposed a vote of thanks. http://www.navhindtimes.com/articles.php?Story_ID=03184 Rs 5 cr earmarked for underground cables at Saligao NT News Desk Panaji, March 17 The Deputy Chief Minister, Dr Wilfred D'Souza has said that an amount of Rs 5 crore has been earmarked for laying of underground power cable lines in Saligao village. He said that high-tension power lines costing Rs 2.5 crore will be laid in the first phase while low-tension power lines estimated to cost Rs 2.5 crore will be installed in second phase, he added. Dr D'Souza was speaking after commissioning 100 KVA new power transformer at Salmona, Saligao in Bardez, today. This transformer will help to improve voltage and smooth power supply in the area in which about 200 residents will be benefited. Speaking further, Dr de Souza said the government was committed to provide all basic necessities like water and power supply, construction of roads and growth demands of the common people in the state. The Dy Chief Minister stated that the works of construction of various roads in these areas will be taken up, soon. He assured to provide sodium vapour lamps and streetlights in Salmona and surrounding areas.
