Ooh la la! because of the "intelligent" jokes, I see a few "emerging from
the woodwork"..... looks like we have Marshal to thank for this even though
he did get a slight rap on the knuckle in the first instance.
From: "Louis D'Souza" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>
Anyway - I am sure that quite a number of vintage readers (like myself,
Chris, Kevin? and possibly Annette) will identify with the penultimate line
below..
You know you are a Goan if...........
No matter where you go in the world you will find another Goan named
DaCosta, DeMelo, D'Souza, Fernandes, Monteiro or Rodrigues.
You have six middle names, most of which you can't pronounce.
You have annoying nicknames like Petus, Babush (or Busha, Bostiao, Forsulo
or Popot!
You are really confused if you are Portuguese..... Heaven forbid Indian!
How can I identify with anything or anyone? On reading the first few lines,
I've just found out I am not a Goan despite being born in Saligao, & I'm
hyper... Louis, are you sure you got your "joke" right?
I can identify only with 3 of the criteria for being a Goan:- Does this mean
I'm not Goan? Tell me quickly!
Surname is D'Souza & that too because I adopted hubby's surname.... & yes I
do have 2 middle names but not 6, but thank goodness for those 2 then....
And I do know that some mangoes are called Alfons & some are called Mancorad
but didnt know they were Portuguese names - ha ha! Thought they got those
names because someone with those surnames grew them in their compound, Is
there a Vas (Vaz, dont know from where to get that funny looking squiggle to
type over the "a") mango then? though we are Vas we have Alfons Mango tree
in our compound.
I dont understand that statement about Portuguese & Indian either. Louis,
somewhere you have got confused & made a booboo!!! & I'm really confused!
You call everybody who is brown and not Goan "bingtakar" and make fun of
them in Konkani.
What is bingtakar? The only time I heard someone talking about bingta was
when we went on the Hill near the Saligao Seminary - is it some red flowery
fruit? If I'm right, then I cant reconcile this word with making fun of
someone - I must be really dim! and not a Goan to boot! boohoo...
You interject "what", "men", and "re"(ray) in every line of your
conversation
You show you are listening to the conversation by saying "really?" or "you
don't say!"
You call an older person you've never met before "uncle" or "auntie"
I think someone is out to prove I'm not a Goan!
Everyone is a family friend
Are you kidding? I've found out, to my chagrin, that everyone is my cousin,
albeit 29th or 31st cousin, but definitely related, so where will the
family friend come in - no space at all....
One club (Club De Goa?) is not enough to cater to 10 Goans
Your family is fighting over property they inherited from someone else
Your mother has a minor disagreement with her sister and doesn't talk with
her for 10 years
No knowledge!
You think you can sing
Hey there, I dont "think" I can sing, I "know" I can sing & sing I do -
in the bathroom, in the club, at the parties, in the church - gosh! why am
I making this statement, just proving further that I'm not a Goan - boo
hoo! But the line did get my goat.
I can see you are one of the true Goans, Louis - paka ...100%... yeh yeh I
know you picked the whole thing from somewhere. What erroneous conclusions
& what firm statements - jeez!
You make tea in a saucepan
Sorry I drink tea only once a day & that too I use a teabag, easier & time
is not wasted
You eat onions with everything
You get excited when "king fish" is mentioned
You eat last night's curry the next morning
To all 3 above - yuk! yuk! & yuk!
Excited when kingfish is mentioned? - must be some one going cuckoo!
But I do remember my granny having "kalchi codi" with "paes" around 10.30
a.m. every day.
You call mangoes by Portuguese names
You see pictures of the Caribbean and you say "it's just like Goa"
You go back to Goa and people treat you like a member of the royal family
Hmm! didnt get these two either - tubelight still to light up!
Havent been to the Caribbean yet, will let you know my comment when I do
reach there.
Royal Family? didnt see any tiaras yet! Still get to do the dirty work of
running from pillar to post.
You get very upset when the airlines refuse to accept your luggage, which
is
20 kg overweight>
You are comfortable going back for a holiday in May just to sample the
mangoes, jackfruits, cantans, bibes, and the miscut.
Not interested in any of the above - but why are the soonas & jumlums
missed out?
You wash your butt quickly when you hear the pig grunting.. oink oink!!
In olden times, not anymore - the oink oink has turned to swish swish
gurgle!!! Ha ha! but this one sure made me laugh.
Have a great day wherever you may be.
I am having a great day but I had a good 1/2 minute laugh at the end. Sorry
Louis, I typed my first para before reading your "penultimate line". Thanks
a bunch.
Have a good day & a good solid week, we are 1/2 way through our week, thank
goodness.
Ta ra
Annette
