NT Staff Reporter, Panaji Aug 18 A team of orthopedic surgeons headed by Dr Zelio D'Mello [of Sonarbhat, Saligao], an associate professor at the orthopedics department, Goa Medical College hospital, has for the first time anywhere in the state, performed gender-specific total knee replacement on a female patient suffering from arthritis of the knee joint.
This is the latest version of the knee joint replacement which is used only for female patients. The anatomy of the knee joint in females is different from that of males, and hence the need for a separate knee joint for females was conceived, informed Dr Zelio. This knee joint helps the patient game more amount of knee bending and enables easy and painless mobility of the knee, he added. Dr D'Mello and his team have been performing knee and hip joint surgeries for the last four years with an excellent track record in over hundred cases. Dr Shaila Kamat, associate professor, Department of Anesthesia, is the consultant anesthetist for these operations. The Goa Doordarshan TV had earlier telecast a knee replacement surgery performed by Dr D'Mello. This has been appreciated by many viewers and has even benefited the less-priviledged patients suffering from arthritis who have been made aware of the government's support in providing free joints to the needy patients under the Mediclaim scheme.
