A very smart and switched on lass .
Hmm! Dont know about the adjectives & alliteration. but I do remember the
Fernandes family - Mr. Fernandes was Bank Manager in BOI Saligao Branch,
Mrs. Fernandes used to teach in the school I think, Marlen got married &
went to the UK if I recall, & Greta was the cute petite daughter & they had
a white car.....I think, & the girls were sometimes picked up by their dad.
This para of mine takes care of your 2 paras below, Anthony.
Seem to recall that her bespectacled , smartly bush shirted Dad was
one of the few vehicle owning bank managers
@ the time( or any vehicle owners for that matter )
Also seem to think that Greta had a sister and that they may have been
picked up and dropped off from LCHS by car back in the day ::)
As a Std V student @ LCHS often used to walk through the Muddavadi
coconut groves and houses to the bank with my Dad , to deposit the few
birthday rupees I might have garnered from a generous relative or some
such.
Oh dear! You went to the bank to deposit the money? you started early eh? -
gaining interest? I just kept my money in an envelope in the cupboard until
I had enough to buy something I wanted. We didnt get huge monetary gifts
like the children of today get or expect, & neither did we earn much pocket
money, if at all.
& Anthony, I like your description of Muddavadi - coconut groves indeed! I
remember walking through all that sand - yuks! it was not clean as I
learned to my cost once, so I preferred to get onto the main road on my
cycle. Even used my cycle through the "groves" as sometimes visited those 2
gentle sisters (Bemvinda & !!!) who were sisters to my grandaunt. (Mel
D'Souza's mother).
I hope to get hold of Mel's book when I'm next in Goa - his aunts would have
been proud of him & I'm sure some of his memories & stories will be written
around them - they had a certain aura about them which spoke of old times.
His book is well received in Canada & by those who have read it.
Also used to see her occassionally , as one waited to have ones shoes
repaired ( standard issue Bata ) at the "mochi" /shoe repair man's
stall right by the banks exit ,or have one's hair reluctantly trimmed
at the barbers nearby
Been there myself - bank, mochi etc. in Cotula. I'm lucky enough to have a
mochi here too, just opposite my house - got my sandal done on Saturday, &
my bag done on Sunday - silly zip piece came off in my hand & couldnt open
the pocket to get out my tel. address book.
Do I hear cyber peals of laughter and mirth ::))
Umm! no peals heard but grin seen..... Hey Anthony - did you really let the
barber cut/trim your hair? I think you just let your Dad spend his money on
a trim that was no trim - as I recall your hair was always framing your face
& ears & it was definitely not short, not when I knew you as a youngster.
( Yes, I did used to have hair and lots of it ::))
Yeh we all do at first, then we keep donating it to the bathtub & shower
tray until we are bald ....oops! sorry! I mean follicle challenged. Who
coined this phrase anyway? I was ordered to use it rather than the simple
plain word "bald". Times have changed!

PS : Seem to also recall that Paulito, at the time a dashing young
swain/buck about town, was also an up and coming bank man ,before
branching out hugely successfully into real estate /construction with
his engineer brother Mauricio et al .
You sure use a lot of adjectives when describing people, Anthony. Maybe I
could add here
"swashbuckling" - yeh I seem to remember reading this during my college days
in the Barbara Cartland novels. - ha ha!
Yep, know all these people you mention & their families. Are they still in
Saligao or have they moved to apartments in Miramar, Mapusa, etc.?
Another was goatee bearded and bespectacled Joaquim D'Mello? who has a
home very close to the bank , as does Paulito's family (red one ?
almost directly across from the bank )
Yeh, met Joaquim a long time ago on one of my trips to Goa - his wife was
one of the well known NCC cadets - treking, shooting etc. & though I knew
all his kids I doubt I'd recognise them so many years hence - one son, the
apple of Joaquim's eye after the cute girls. Did any of them marry one of
our "dashing Saligao swains/bucks"?
Gosh! all those years ago! It was good, going down memory lane - Thanks Rico
& Anthony.
Referring to Kevin's mail - did Greta become a vet? - neither of them
followed in father's or mother's footsteps eh?
All must be enjoying nice cool weather around the world...perhaps cold &
freezing weather in some parts of the world also. But wherever all
SaligaoNetters are - once again - Happy Feast!
