To give you some history ... this August when I was down in Goa for my father's funeral, I met Fr. Nasciment at the clergy home and although I promised to return to spend some time with him, I never got the chance to. However, in the few minutes I was able to spend with him, I thanked him for his informative postings to SaligaoNet and other newsgroups. He told me that the best thanks he could get is for people to write back online commenting on his postings but I also learned that since moving to the clergy home, he had difficulty getting online access. His health has not been great too and so travelling to a cybercafe is difficult although he is mobile and still very sharp. It was at that time that I thought about how isolated I would feel in a similar circumstance after having been disconnected from regular life (Fr. N's parish work in Vasco and elsewhere kept him active and connected to the cybercommunity through Daniel and others.) I likened it to the time, over 15 years ago, when we got a telephone connection at home in Saligao and it was like a window opened to the world for my mother who was ailing and confined to the home at the time. We are such an affluent community and with the farflung diaspora who have been brought together in cyberspace by this network started by Rico, I thought the least we could do for Fr. Nasciment was to give him some happiness, in his retirement, to do what he loves doing best, chronicling his memoirs and keeping in touch with anyone across the world through the gift of the internet. To that end, we researched the best option for him and decided that a laptop with online access would suit his needs better than a desktop computer with the added expenses of UPS, monitor etc. He could take it along to a library whenever the need called to do some research and could stay connected if he had to travel. Ashley has generously donated his time and expertise to procuring and installing the computer and connecting it to broadband access in Porvorim. Depending on the funds raised, we may also be able to provide Fr. Nasciment with a printer. Let us all pull together to make this a versatile Christmas present for Fr. Nasciment from the community he has worked so hard to serve selflessly all his life.
