I concur with Doug's assessment, a lot of it depends on the type of check.
My cycle takes about
five minutes with 340 checks.  We are doing several of NT performance checks
and they are slow.  
Pings are very fast, the others fall somewhere in between.

What is the maximum # of checks servers alive supports? Lets assume they're
split 50/50 between pings and port 80 checks. The hardware is a P3 733 with
256 MB. I assume that the hardware wouldn't be the limiting factor but I
