Thanks for the feedback, Dirk I got your other replies also.

I already have a check set up to monitor the SMTP port on the mail server.
However the mail server is not under my control and occasionally we have a
slight issue on the corporate network that causes my Windows Messaging
system to lose it's SMTP authentification.

Some times the SMTP issue is resolved before the usual SMTP check spots this
in Servers Alive, so I have no alert that advises that SMTP has been
unavailable, and it is only when user complain that the outbound Windows
Messaging system has not been sending mails that we realise there has been a
problem.

When we manually check the machine running the Windows Messaging application
we find that we have to re-supply the SMTP authentification details. This
then reconnects the Windows Messaging system to the SMTP service and if you
check the Outbox of the Windows Messaging application you see the backlogged
messages being sent out.

It is this Outbox I want to monitor, so that if we see a backlog of messages
building then we can check the machine and re-supply the SMTP
authentification details as required to keep the service running.

Any other suggestions?

Regards,

Andy

Andy,

I don't think that count files is going to work, I think Dirk is right about
setting up the regular smtp check that is built into SA...though there is
another external check that comes with SA called "SMTP2POP3" that will make
sure that the SMTP service is not only running, but actually working, I
think it sends test emails to a pop3 server...which would give you a better
check on the entire mail delivery process.

What do you think, Dirk?

IF it's realy an SMTP connection that fails, then the normal Servers ALive
SMTP check can work.

Forgive me if this has already been asked but I didn't see it in the
archive.

I would like to run a check against the standard Microsoft Windows Messaging
Inbox on NT.

I have an application that uses Windows Messaging in order to communicate
with the outside world, however occasionally the SMTP connection fails and
there is nothing to indicate this other than the fact that I get a backlog
of messages queuing in the Windows Messaging Outbox.

I will be moving away from this method of communicating with the outside
world at some point but until then I need some method of automatically
monitoring it.

Does anyone know of a way to check if there are any messages in the Windows
Messaging Outbox?

I assume countfiles could possibly be used, but how I don't know.

Does anyone have any ideas?

Regards,

Andy
