The SA machine would act as a "client" to the SMTP servers. The SMTP port on
the SA machine won't be open. In fact the same way Servers Alive now sends
mail to the "fixed" SMTP server (you defined within the setup), will be used
but then to the "correct" SMTP server (based on the MX record of the TO
domain).

Agreed...currently, I am using my ISP's mail server, and figure that
sooner or later they will lock it down for relaying, and that will require
that I either setup a dedicated machine with IIS and smtp...or find another
solution...what Dirk is proposing sounds rather elegant, as long as you can
do it securely.

Tell me, would this built-in smtp create any new security issues...could
it make box we run SA on be available for other folks to use as a mail relay
point?

Yes, I would like to see something like this. I can't use our main
Lotus Notes server because it won't allow relaying, so I have an SMTP server
running on the Servers Alive machine. This requires running parts of IIS,
which I am not happy about. If you could incorporate mail functionality
(CDONTS or CDOSYS?) into Servers Alive, I could get rid of SMTP and IIS.

Sending mail directly to the destination SMTP server is that something
that
    is interesting for you guys?
(with that we mean that instead of sending the mail to your smtp server
who
will relay it to the destination SMTP server, we would directly connect
to
the destination server (based on the MX record of the TO of the mail)
and
    send it).
