I was checking 480+ switches and getting a LOT of emails and pages when the

This is where the SA dependencies are helpful.  You set up one basic
ping check to make sure the VPN is up, then you can set your other
checks to depend on that check.  That way, when the VPN link fails, you
don't get 50 different alerts for remote machines when the real problem
is just the VPN link.
