I wrote a little VB app that is a run-time clock. Displays in the task bar the up time
since launch. If you're interested I'll shoot you the code and/or app.

So what you'd probably want to do is to put something like
"Iexplore.exe" in the Startup folder in each machine's All Users program
groups. Iexplore.exe doesn't start by itself under normal
circumstances, and that'd be a way for you to verify that someone is
logged into the machine. Of course, you'd also have to train the staff
not to close the browser. If you wanted to be a little fancier, you
could pick an application that runs in the system tray, so it'd be less
likely to get closed by accident. The WinAmp or RealPlayer agent comes
to mind, although most servers won't have sound cards, but you get the
idea.

Our prod servers must be physically logged in... we have the registry
set to clear the last used userid and such.... these are all servers,
NT 4.0 & Win2K.
Our security gestapo have an issue with auto-logged in servers... guess
I do too... <grin>

What do you mean by "logged in"? Is this a server OS, or a workstation
OS? Does a user have to physically log in, or is it using a
TweakUI-style utility to automatically log in a user?

I'm looking for a way to check to see if a server is up but not logged
in... long story, don't ask!
I want to use PING as my "depends on" check, as the IPSTACK will answer
pretty early in the boot process, but I can't figure out what to use to
tell that the box is up but not logged in.
Thought I could tell using a service (like telnet) that I would then
shutoff after login, but it looks as though some of those services don't
start unless the box is logged in either.... or do they?
Anyone got any ideas?
And then I need a way to check for the absense of that something, and
that absense would be OK... kind of a negative check, but negative check
is OK.... Know what I mean?
