Ethernet.
If you
have the UPSs on servers then perhaps the serial port software would provide
some hook you could use. Maybe it writes to a log file you could
parse. But I would think it would need some process running on a
PC to query the system. I don't think the serial ports provide a
console type interface like a router or switch but I really haven't looked at
one recently.
In my
world, these UPSs are not on servers but rather in communications closets.
All they need to do is hold the juice up till the generators get started.
The APC SNMP cards provide a web interface and can email status and
warnings. My management loves to see the Battery checked OK messages every
2 weeks - gives him that warm fuzzy feeling that all is
well.
Perhaps it sounds flippant, but if you have a
stack of almost anything, I would buy the Ethernet card(s). We have a 30KV
UPS for the server farm that was purchased before me. It does not have an
SNMP card and apparently it is a bugger to retrofit it. For that, all I
can do is hope the plant services people are paying attention when the air
filters need cleaning or a battery is dying. I'd give anything - well
almost - for the ability to query it.
