The smtp2pop3 cannot really identify a slow connection versus a down
connection. One cycle it send the email and the next cycle (depending on
your configuration) it receives it. If it does not receive the appropriate
mail (sequence number if you will) then it is down. Now you can control
how often it checks by using the check priority in Server's Alive. This
allows you to get a around a slow connection.

I envision setting up a couple of SMTP2Pop3 checks checking on different
cycles. For example your first one checks every cycle. The other one
checks every 5 cycles (~5-10 minute if Salive is set to check every minute)
and therefore will be down only if emails take longer than 5 minutes to
travel end-to-end. Yet another check that runs every 20 or more cycles.
When one is down you know it is slow when all three down you know it is
really down.

Subject: [SA-list] SMTP2POP3 check (mailflow)

Can someone explain to me exactly what this SMTP2POP3 mail flow check is
actually checking? I know in general it sends an email
using SMTP and then checks if it is in the mailbox via POP3.

Does it use sequence numbers to determine if a mail is lost? For example, it
sends email #1, email #2 and on check it only ever
gets #2. In this case is a DOWN reported (ie. email #1 has been lost but
mail is actually flowing in a limited way)?

Can it determine that there is a long email delay. That is, mail is flowing
but its taking 10 mins, 2 hours to get from SMTP to
POP3??

Basically I need to determine these two cases not just mail flow so I need
to know that this tool can determine this. If it
cannot, is there anything else out there that I can use or any suggestions
on what one would need to do to put this together
using SA?

Tim
