Sometimes the solution just requires someone to show you another path.  The added benefit of learning something about what your monitoring is a bonus too.

The TSM Client Scheduler service is running properly on other servers, but is not monitored by Servers Alive.  It is a service manually started by the TSM Client Acceptor service, and only when needed by that other service.  It doesn't lend itself too well to being monitored if it's up for a few seconds then shut down.  Now I know a little more about what is being monitored on our network.

Thank you for showing me another path.

do you have other systems running that same service?  And can it be monitored on those servers correctly?

Dirk.

Subject: [SA-list] A false positive, perhaps

I've got an interesting situation where an item I'm monitoring with Servers Alive 4.1 always reports a down situation, when it is in fact up.

I am monitoring the IBM Tivoli TSM Client Scheduler service on a remote server.  If I connect to this server via Remote Desktop, I observe that the service is running (both in Computer Management and from the command prompt with the sc query command.  Tivoli Storage Manager behaves as expected.  Incidentally, I am also monitoring 13 other services, 3 diskspace checks, and a filecounter.  All of the other items respond as expected.

Here is what shows up in the log (with maximum logging) regarding this service:

Wednesday, July 06, 2005 12:15:51 AM GetServiceStatus TSM Client Scheduler:
Wednesday, July 06, 2005 12:15:51 AM NTService check of TSM Client Scheduler on 192.168.200.3 failed

I've gone in and reviewed the Check tab, and I clicked the ". . ." button to both ensure that it can authenticate, and that I am choosing the service correctly.

Any help that anyone can provide would be most appreciated.

Thanks!
