Don't keep saying that. He'll put the price up. I prefer to call it a superb product at a very reasonable price.

I run several different servers, one for each subnet, typically, usually at the third octet level... that keeps the SA traffic off the backbone... or at least to my way of thinking... Also keeps the cycle times down.... I keep a browser window open on the "production servers" because they are the critical ones. All of the others are available on their own web pages, and I like it that way, because I don't have to scroll through 300+ entries on a single page!! Only drawback I've found is keeping straight which server is sending me pages... with text pagers limited to 200 chars, I have to almost "code" things to get enough info into the page! At the license price that Dirk has things set to, the cost of each license is a pittance!! And his support is well worth the money!! I have half a dozen copies with 30-90 checks each. I can't imagine NOT running multiple copies, because A)The software is cheap B)If the number of checks is reasonable, then it does not require a dedicated server, and you can run it on an existing server C)By running local copies, I keep all of the SA traffic off my WAN links (except alerts) D)avoids single point of failure, E)You can use each copy of SA to watch each other, F)removes the need for VPN between the monitored network and the monitoring network. Minuses in my opinion are few. Having to admin multiple copies of the app creates some work, but I think it's worth it. Some people may say $ is a minus. I do not. SA is almost ridiculously cheap. As for combining the web output, I am not the man to talk to. I use a very simple HTML template and have a separate page output locally by each copy of Servers Alive. I have a "Master" page with links to all the other pages. I suppose you could script something that would copy all the pages to a single web server, but my simple system works for me. I hope this helps. -----Original Message----- From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] On Behalf Of Chris S. Mang Sent: Monday, July 11, 2005 5:52 PM To: [email protected] Subject: [SA-list] One monitoring server or more? Hello, Currently, we monitor almost 900 items across a number of servers around the world, utilizing one instance of Servers Alive 4.1. It currently takes about 18 minutes to run through all those checks. I would like to reduce that response time by 50%. Does anyone run multiple Servers Alive instances (on different servers) to improve performance? What are some of the plusses and minuses to running multiple SA servers versus a single SA server (other than cost of additional licensing for multiple servers)? How difficult is it to combine the web page output from multiple SA servers? Thanks for any information you provide!
