Lots of the checks are disk usage and cpu usage and mainly over wan connections, hence the delay, I think?, each check seems to take several seconds at least.
I think multithreading the checks is the only answer? I'm at 1600+ and a full cycle(not everything is checked each cycle) is 12 minutes. Definitely reduce the time between checks, it makes a huge difference. Look at non-critical items that do not need to be checked each cycle(disk space, printer page counts, etc. I check these once an hour.). Also minimize the number of HTML pages generated - these can add quite a bit of time to a cycle. Reduce your timeouts on checks especially if you get a lot of down items.
